Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
