Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
