Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
